That’s a cicada killer wasp. Guess what they do. They kill cicadas and plant their eggs in them. Unless you intentionally fuck with them, which I’d suggest you don’t, they won’t bother you. They sound like little prop airplanes when they buzz around.

I also read that there’s another wasp that lays its eggs in the killer’s nest. And they hatch and eat the cicada and the killer larvae.

Yeah cicada killers are big intimidating fatties. I murder every paper wasp or yellow jacket I find (those angry fuckers can get bent) but I tend to research the strange wasps I see. Turns out a lot of them are passive and beneficial.

After we put in a garden we got some of these guys:

Sphex Pensylvanicus the great black wasp. Pretty big and intimidating with really pretty iridescent blue wings. Turns out they are chill loaners that take all the pests off our vegetables and stuff them in a hole for thier young to eat when they hatch. We've never gotten a tomato bug since they moved in.

Ground digger wasps (those) are pretty scary but really don’t mind you being around, certainly not aggressive unprovoked. They dig in the ground with their front legs like a dog and dig up cicadas, they’re pretty neat.

Your Cicada killer is a baby compared to the one that holed up in my backyard a handful of years ago. The hole was enormous and it would fly out like a 747.
